SOFRECO has been, in July 2016, entrusted by the Irrigation and Water Management Utilization Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation of the Union of Myanmar as technical assistant for implementing the AFD financed project entitled "Myinkun and Kanni Pumped Irrigation Projects in the Central Dry Zone of Myanmar".
The technical assistance team (an international team leader and five national experts) is based in Magway for the project since July 2016. A new team leader is to be recruited to replace the current team leader until the end of the project (expected in November 2019).
The overall objective of the project is to sustainably improve livelihoods and incomes of the farmers in the targeted irrigation schemes in Magway division and the development of profitable and sustainable irrigated agriculture. The specific objectives of the project are:
•improving the performance of irrigation infrastructure and institutions and water resource management,
•establishing agricultural production support mechanisms and
•to enable agricultural use of the rehabilitated perimeters.
To achieve these objectives, the project has four major components:
Component 1: rehabilitation and upgrading of existing infrastructure to irrigate a potential area of about 462 ha (1,140 acres).
Component 2: Water Users' Organizations (WUOs) and improvement of Management, Operation and Maintenance (MOM) of PIPs.
Component 3: Agricultural enhancement of the irrigated schemes to improve water use efficiency and productivity.
Component 4: Monitoring, evaluation and capitalization that favour exchanges with other ongoing initiatives in the CDZ dealing with rehabilitation of irrigation schemes and to stimulate regional and union level reflections on PIP management.
